Things To Consider

There are several considerations to be made when deciding to purchase an Icelandic Horse. Whether to buy an import or domestic is one. Imported horses should be checked for spavin. They are also more prone to Summer Eczema (Sweet Itch) than domestic horses. If buying a domestic, registerability should be checked. Some breeders, importers, and sellers do not have proper paperwork for their horses.

An imported horse may have different training than a domestic horse, but yet that depends on several factors also, such as where the training took place, who the trainer was, and what methods they use.

Not all Icelandic Horses have all 5 gaits; some are 4 gaited, and some are 3 gaited. Be sure that you know what you're getting and whether you can handle all the gaits.

Training: The definition of training may mean one thing to one person and something different to another. Double check on the type of training your horse has or has not had. Some breeders, trainers, importers, sellers place emphasis on under saddle gait and do not do foundation training.

Realize that Icelandic Horses take time to settle in to their new circumstances. It may take some time to bond with your horse.
